Legacy System is the term given to any production system that is no longer under current development and is being maintained in order to continue delivering a particular business functionality. Overtime the development teams will move on and knowledge about the internals of the system will fade, with the general expectation that the system will eventually be decommissioned and replaced by a more modern one.

The dynamic nature of a business means that at some future point a change to the Legacy System will be requested, but with development teams unavailable or unwilling to work on the system, a small change can suddenly escalate into a major issue.
